The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, MA. The Red Sox compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the American League (AL) East division. Founded in 1901 as one of the American League's eight charter franchises, the Red Sox' home ballpark has been Fenway Park since 1912. Original to the park is the Green Monster, the 37'2" high left field wall famous for preventing home runs and the highest among the walls in current MLB fields. Baseball greats like Cy Young, Carlton Fisk, Babe Ruth, Dom DiMaggio, Roger Clemens, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and David Ortiz all played for the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The team has won eight World Series championships and have played in twelve, however it had one of the longest championship droughts in baseball history. Dubbed the "Curse of the Bambino" after its alleged beginning with the Red Sox' sale of Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees two years after their world championship in 1918, the Red Sox had an 86-year wait before the team's sixth World Championship in 2004.
